A: Choosing a brand of shingle is not just a matter of appearance. A better quality of shingle will last longer, resist algae growth longer, and be more resistant to wind and hail damage. The three “top” brands are Certainteed, Owens-Corning, and GAF. These companies make high quality shingles and are about the same price. The next lower tier includes Tamco and IKO. These shingles cost your contractor a tad less, but the reputation of both companies is on the rise. All have similar warranties.
Note that every company has class action suits filed against it and most are still ongoing. I’m not sure how reliable a judge such litigation is about the quality of the brands. In my experience, I have had no problems with with any of the top three.
